Monday Bits and Pieces

(h/t to Texas Fred) The Army has notified the family of Matt Maupin of Ohio that they have ID'd his remains. The thoughts and prayers of a grateful nation are with the Maupin family during their time of loss.

My first BlogTalkRadio show was Friday morning - talk about a learning curve! Many, many thanks to the Loon for her immeasurable support and help.

A package arrived from Hammacher/Shlemmer on Friday morning. It is a slide-and-negative-to-digital scanner, which will allow me to first transfer all of my grandfather's slides to digital for safekeeping (without paying an outrageous amount of money for someone to do it for me) and second to start offering the same service to others, without charging an outrageous amount of money to do it.

Here in the "office" where the computer is, I have built storage shelves for my model railroading collection and my wife's craft supplies. The cats have discovered that if they climb up, in, and around the various boxes and stored items that we can't get to them to remove them from the room when we leave. That allows us to instead find the little gifts they leave behind. Ah, the joys of sharing a house with cats.

Sticky Post - News

(You know the drill - scroll down for new posts. No, really - there are newer posts under this one. Don't always go by the date, OK? Gosh. Just scroll down already.)

I will be on BlogTalkRadio starting Friday morning - since I am at home during the day, and MEG doesn't (usually) get up until 8:00 or so, I have scheduled a show to start at 0700 MST - which is 0700 PDT, 0800 MDT, 0900 CDT, and 1000 EDT. If you are farther east or west than that, please adjust accordingly. The name of the show is "I'm Thinking of the "O" Word" - pretty original, eh?

The show can be accessed at http://blogtalkradio.com/carycartter. Tune in on this Red Friday to listen, or call in at (347) 838-9573. The show will start out as a general talk type show, and I am willing to follow the topic just about anywhere. Same rules apply there as here - Keep it Clean, or I Will.

I look forward to hearing from all of you. In the meantime, go on over to BTR and see who else you might know.

Thursday -not a roundup

Sorry.

Both girls are sick, and down for the count. I'm updating my reading of my favorite blogs (the list is to the left, a little below this post ... a little further ... under "Blogroll", see it?) and I humbly request you visit these fine bloggers. Leave comments where appropriate. Let them know I said "hi" unless you can see that I've been there today, by the comments I left...

Remember, my pilot BlogTalkRadio show tomorrow - don't know where it'll go, but I'm pretty sure one of the topics will be the uncommon virtue of common sense.

Not that I preach on that here enough, or anything...

I've also found out recently (more like, been re-informed) that the use of ellipses is considered a grammatic faux pas ... oh well ...

My Day, and Welcome To It

For some reason, MEG has decided to start getting up earlier. That might tweak the show schedule. Maybe I'll start keeping her up a little later...

This morning, we had a great time. Breakfast, and playing, and chasing the dogs. MEG wanted to go outside and play in the back yard. No problem, right?

Well ... remember the dogs mentioned earlier?

Yeah. They had all weekend to hide their own "Easter Eggs" and one of them likes to kind of kick the gravel over her gifts, hiding them pretty well.

So, I'm out there trying to get the yard apples picked up before MEG can get to them. You see, she likes to "help" daddy by picking them up too. Of course, she doesn't have a scoop or anything... so daddy has to move pretty darn quick, I don't mind telling you. Didn't move quite quick enough on one of the hidden ones - however, I did catch her hand before she moved it very far away from the site - enough to get it cleaned off with a wipe, and then washed real good.

Don't tell TMBWitW, okay? She gets a little worried about things like that...

Now, MEG is down for the nap, I've been through the BTR training, and I'm chatting with a friend in Yahoo while posting this and listening to K-LOVE on the internet. I think I'll go watch the DVR of New Amsterdam from last night. Good series. If you don't get it on your service, try checking out Hulu, a new site that has a bunch of shows archived with limited commercials.

Life is good.

Happy Easter

May the joy of the Resurrection be with you this morning.

He is risen! Risen indeed!

I just figured out why I was up, and not able to sleep. I believe the Lord wanted me to know this. I mentioned in the comment about my failings - since this was not posted until after I had gone through my "new entry" blogs for the day, and since I don't get on the net on Wednesdays, by the time Thursday rolled around it was no longer a "new entry" - and thus my FAILING to check on every blog in my blogroll every day, whether it has a new entry or not.

Mea culpa

Red Friday

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Wearing my Patriot today.

Working on getting a BlogTalk Radio show off the ground, working on the technical side of it.

Going to the chiropractor this morning - same as every Friday morning. This is the price I pay for living as hard as I did when younger; if I had know I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself!

UPDATE: MEG is not feeling well, to the point that she is sleeping very soundly, so the chiropractor has been put off until Monday morning.

Thursday Roundup

Well, hidey-ho, neighbors! Looks like another slow Thursday roundup - ya'll gotta start writing new entries on late Wednesday, or something - or at least tell blogrolling.com you've updated your blog...

Reality is Overrated is sick and tired of Smilin' Bob.

Sugar Cat went Wordless.

Bushwack updates us on OBL's latest hi-jinks. Oh, and this is in support of Denmark:

TJ goes all anti-contrarian on us, and compares murder rates between the US as a whole and DC in particular; also lets us know that Sean Penn has forecast the demise of Fox News.

Third Wave Dave gets on the OBL subject (with updated pictures of current sightings) and talks about the BHO watch on Fox (not that it matters, because Sean Penn says they won't be around much longer anyway).

The BLOG pontificates about bad style.

As a regular church goer like myself, prying 1 is having a hard time believing Obama never heard what his preacher was spewing. I meant preaching. No, really, I did.

Jenn targets the moonbat terrorists who are targeting our recruiting centers.

Gawfer gets all warm and fuzzy about Obama.

Just John remembers his travel plans this time of year about five years ago.

Greybeard joins the Obama discussion on Pitchpull.

kris helps spread the word about a found cat - might not be in your neighborhood, though...

Amy Proctor passes along Iraq's opinion of the US just pulling out cold turkey.

Hope your Thursday is a happy one!

Threefer

Since I won't be blogging tomorrow (TMBWitW works from home on Wednesdays, and uses the computer, remember? really, I've got to get some schedules printed up or something...) I figured I better put this up tonight:Mr. and Mrs. PistachioThis is the famous BlogTalk Radio duo of Mrs. and Mr. Pistachio.

Doug and CaryAnd this, of course, is the Political Pistachio himself with yours truly.

Dinner was delicious, as usual, and our server, Andrea, was wonderful, as usual. We are so glad to have found My Mother's.

Twofer

I almost forgot to mention - Doug Gibbs of Political Pistachio fame is in town with his beautiful wife for an Angels spring training game. After the game, they are going to have dinner with us at our favorite restaurant, My Mother's.

If you know the area, and are there around fiveish, stop in and say hello, or have a slice of pie - we'll be the noisy table in the corner.

Gasoline "Tips"

I got this little blurb from my wonderful GG in Fort Worth. There are some good tips in here, but there are also some misleading ones, too. My comments will be in italics. Full disclosure: I used to drive a fuel truck for a truckstop in northern Arizona. No, it wasn't Little America in Flagstaff. It was called the Bellemont Truck Center, outside of Bellemont AZ, across the freeway from the Navajo Army Depot on I-40, west of Flagstaff.

ON PUMPING GAS

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.
obviously, this was written a while ago. everyone knows that California pays more than $10.00 a gallon, because McCain is going to be president

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
this kind of threw me for a loop - I never knew that all these different types of fuel were delivered through the same pipeline

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.
point of order - and a physics lesson. the underground storage tanks are like thermos bottles. the ground around them insulates the contents, so the temperature of what was delivered will mingle slightly with the existing temperature, and hold steady; unless the surface temperature of the ground is highly different from the product (more than 35 degrees) the ground temperature will not overtly affect the fuel temperature due to the tanks being below the frost line to prevent heaving.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
unless you are in Canada or Hawaii, this is true. in Canada the fuel temp is below 60, so the fuel company wants to get paid for what they pump. Hawaii has common sense laws in this area. the rest of the US is out of luck, since the average fuel temp is above 60 and will then pump less than what you are paying for

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
the debate here is whether the vapors are really being produced at a rate that it would make a difference on how fast the gas is pumped; over a year's time is it worth YOUR time to double the amount of time spent pumping gas?

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.
"half full or half empty" - that sounds like a philosopher's conundrum. again, it's a matter of what your time is worth - do you want to spend twice as much time pumping gas as normal, considering that vapors in your tank are going to stay there unless you do fill up? and, having installed the underground tanks, i can assure you they have no floating roof - only the above ground, tank-farm storage facilities use the floating roofs, and then to keep the vapors to a minimum so as to avoid flash fires.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.
between the filters in the tanks, on the pumps, and in your fuel line, what little bit of dirt that might be stirred up when a load is delivered is not worth worrying about. heck, what's to say the truck didn't leave just before you pulled up, and the fuel is still swirling around from being delivered?

Now, if you are REALLY concerned about not buying so much fuel, let's look at ways that have been proved to increase your fuel economy:

1. Keep your vehicle tuned and maintained.
2. Check and correct your cold tire pressure weekly.
3. Drive like there is an egg under your right foot.
4. Anticipate the stops and let off the gas earlier.
5. Most cities have the traffic lights timed. Get on the rhythm and reduce the number of times you need to accelerate or brake.
6. Carpooling reduces the amount of fuel YOU buy. Share a ride with one person - cut your fuel purchases in half. Share with three people, cut your fuel purchases by 75%.
7. Use public transportation when practical.
8. Walk or ride a bike for short trips where practical.

And, from a world view point, research where the gas comes from at your favorite station. If you are buying from a station that gets most of it's crude from Middle Eastern sources, think about the impact that is having on us as a country.

Write to your representatives, and badger them - er, I mean, ASK them about revisiting the drilling and refining of our own oil, as opposed to using foreign sources so much. There is no completely energy-independent country in the world, but reducing our dependence on foreign sources only strengthens our sovereignty.

Red Friday

Wearin' the Patriot today.

We had dinner at Golden Corral last night. While going up to get more steak, I spotted a gentleman wearing a VietNam Veteran ball cap, with his ribbons sewn on. I stopped, thanked him for his service, and said "Welcome Home." He thanked me for the sentiments, and said a lot of people just aren't aware of what the average Vet has gone through. I told him I made a point of thanking the Vets I spotted, because too many of them hadn't been thanked by anyone, and almost none of them were told "Welcome Home" by anyone outside their family. His wife sobbed loudly at that point, and he could just nod and turn away.

Have you thanked a Vet lately?

Thursday Roundup

Not a lot happening this Thursday - and since I'm heading over to the church to help with some renovations, I'll just get this done and get out:

John at Fire of Liberty says "It Happens" - what is it? Go find out... a rather explosive article on power generation.

Bushwack has some keen observations on cows, the Constitution, and the Ten Commandments.

Gawfer points out an error in the methods used by the Religion of Peace to show that they are, in fact, Peaceful.

The Loon salutes the 82nd Airborne with an update on where they are headed next.

Jenn left an open thread while she went on vacation to Vegas. She should know better than to leave an open thread while she's gone...

Be sure to check out the blogrolls on the left, the above were the most recently updated when I checked.

And, just for giggles - a Redneck Mansion! Not really, it's an outdoor theatre set as documented here.

Tuesday Stuff

Did your March come in like a lion? Ours did - wind was gusting up around 35 or so, it tried to fool us all by staying cool all weekend - so I'm pretty sure that it will be very pleasant around here for the next few months, until the heat sets back in.

(note to global warming idiots: it's always hot in the summer around here, because it's the desert. that's what happens in the desert - it gets hot in the summer. go back to wishing you hadn't mailed out the 'polar bears are dying from lack of ice' whiney flyer that arrived after news of the thickest polar ice cap in years being formed has reached most people.)

This is also the time of year when people in cooler areas of the country (anywhere there is snow, for example) start thinking about the fact that the bowl games, and, more recently, the Super Bowl, were played here, and the weather didn't suck. The FBR Open showed green fairways and fans wearing shirtsleeves with frosty beers in their hands. In a few weeks PIR will be the center of NASCAR's universe, and again, fans will be shown in shirtsleeves and shorts, while the rest of the country is still thawing out. These people in the cooler areas of the country are processing all these scenes of joyful nice weather gatherings, and calculating how much it would cost to move out here.

I have one request to make of those of you considering such a move: give me a call in July, or August, and arrange to come out and spend the week. I can't guarantee a good time, because I won't be leaving the house unless absolutely necessary, and even then only in the early mornings hours before the sun comes up. Are you kidding? I don't go outside after 110 on the thermometer, unless it's for really, really, really cheap golf rates - and even then, only with enough ice and water to make a penguin uncomfortable. Now, think about this: those days are, more often than not, found in groups of 100 or more. Yes, more than 100 days over 110 more often than not. That means that for a third of the year, you never leave the house.

It just dawned on me that you have that issue now - only because you are snowed in and CAN'T leave the house for over a third of the year. Huh. Just blew my own argument out of the water. How's that for talented?
